Why is My Car Shaking? Common Causes and How to Fix Them

Have you ever felt your steering wheel vibrate or your whole car start to shake for no clear reason? It can be worrying, a little annoying and certainly hard to ignore. Is it the tyres? The engine? Something worse?

If your car is starting to feel like a washing machine on a spin cycle, you’re not alone. There are a few common reasons this happens, and thankfully, most are fixable if caught early.

When Does the Shaking Happen?

Before diving into possible causes, it’s important to pay attention to when your car is shaking. Noticing exactly when the shaking happens can help narrow down the issue and give your mechanic a clearer picture of what’s going on.

  • While braking: If your car shakes when you apply the brakes, it could point to worn brake parts like warped rotors or sticking callipers.
  • While accelerating: Shaking during acceleration might be caused by drivetrain issues such as damaged CV joints or a failing transmission mount.
  • At high speeds: If your car feels fine at lower speeds but starts shaking on the highway, it may be due to tyre balance or alignment issues.
  • While idling: If the car shakes while parked or stopped, it’s often related to engine performance, possibly misfiring spark plugs or engine mount problems.

Common Causes of a Shaking Car

There are a few typical issues that can cause your car to shake – and the way it happens often gives you a clue. Here are some of the most likely causes:

1. Wheel or Tyre Issues

One of the most frequent, and often easiest to fix, causes of vehicle vibration is something to do with the wheels or tyres. If your tyres are unbalanced or your wheels are misaligned, you might notice a wobble, especially at higher speeds. Worn or damaged tyres can also cause uneven rotation, particularly if the tread is wearing down irregularly or there’s internal damage.

Even something as simple as loose lug nuts can lead to significant vibration and pose a safety risk. A good starting point is to check your tyre pressure, inspect the tread for damage, and ensure your lug nuts are tight.

2. Brake Problems

If your car shakes when you press the brake pedal, your braking system is likely the issue. Warped brake rotors are a common cause and usually produce a pulsing sensation in the steering wheel or brake pedal when slowing down. Worn-out brake pads can also create uneven braking pressure, which may result in vibration. In some cases, calipers can stick, causing the brakes to drag slightly and generate heat – another potential source of shaking.

3. Engine Troubles

Shaking that happens while idling or accelerating could be traced back to engine performance. Misfiring spark plugs are a common culprit, especially if the engine feels rough while idling. Clogged air or fuel filters can restrict airflow or fuel delivery, which interferes with smooth combustion. Dirty or failing fuel injectors may cause inconsistent engine firing, leading to noticeable vibrations while driving or sitting still.

4. Suspension or Steering Issues

If the vibration seems to come through the steering wheel, especially while turning or going over uneven surfaces, there may be an issue with your suspension or steering components. Worn ball joints, tie rods, or control arms can create looseness in the system, leading to shakiness or instability. Damaged shocks or struts may also cause the vehicle to bounce more than usual or feel generally wobbly on the road.

5. Drivetrain and Axle Issues

Vibrations during acceleration or gear shifts can often be tied to drivetrain or axle problems. Broken or worn motor mounts, which are designed to absorb engine movement, can allow vibrations to transfer through the vehicle. Damaged CV joints or axles might cause a rhythmic shaking or clicking noise while driving. Transmission issues, especially under load, can also create noticeable shaking and should be checked out sooner rather than later.

When to See a Mechanic

Some vibration issues are minor, but others can signal serious problems, especially if the shaking gets worse quickly or starts to affect your control of the vehicle. If your steering feels loose, the car pulls to one side, or the shaking is strong enough to feel through the seat or brake pedal, it’s best not to take chances.

Waiting too long can lead to bigger issues and higher repair bills, not to mention safety risks. A shaking car could be warning you about failing brakes, a bad tyre, or worn-out suspension components – all of which are worth addressing sooner rather than later.

If you’re unsure what’s causing the vibration, don’t guess. Getting a professional inspection can help pinpoint the issue and give you peace of mind.

Quick Checks You Can Do at Home

Before heading to the shop, there are a few simple things you can check at home. Start with your tyre pressure. Use a gauge to make sure each tyre is inflated to the recommended level. While you’re at it, look for signs of uneven tread wear, damage, or bulges that could be causing the shake.

You can also take a quick look at your wheels and brakes. Check that the lug nuts are tight and look for anything that seems out of place or unusually worn. If you hear strange sounds like clicking, grinding, or humming, try to notice when they happen (e.g. while braking or turning), as that can help a mechanic diagnose the problem more easily.

DIY checks are great for catching obvious issues, but some problems require a trained eye and proper tools. If the shaking doesn’t go away or you’re not confident in what you’re seeing, it’s always a good idea to ask for professional help.
